A YouTube script template you can fill in

Five parts for a long video, four lines for a Short. Copy it, fill it, film or paste it.

A good YouTube script has five parts: a hook that opens on the most interesting thing, a promise of what the viewer will get, the body in short chapters, a payoff that answers the hook, and a close that points to the next video. A Short squeezes that into four lines: hook, reason, turn, payoff. Write it the way you'd say it out loud, one idea per sentence.

Part 1: the hook

The hook is the strangest true thing in your video, said first. Don't welcome people, don't introduce yourself, don't explain what the channel is. Start inside the story.

Test it: if your first line could open any video in your niche, it's not a hook. "Roman harbors have stood in seawater for two thousand years" could only open one video.

  • A surprising fact: "On Venus, a day is longer than a year."
  • A moment: "In the winter of 1959, nine hikers set up camp on a mountain pass."
  • A question with tension: "Who drinks the most coffee?"
  • A contrast: "Modern concrete can crumble in fifty years."

Part 2: the promise

Right after the hook, tell people what they'll know by the end. One or two sentences: "By the end of this, you'll know why it still works and why we stopped using it."

The promise is what earns the next five minutes. Skip it in a Short, where the hook already is the promise.

Part 3: the body, in chapters

Break the middle into three to six chapters, each a small story of its own with a mini-hook at the start. Chapter titles on screen help viewers keep their place and help YouTube's chapters too.

Write one idea per sentence and keep sentences short. A script read by a voice needs a picture for every line or two, so a sentence you can't picture is a sentence to rewrite.

  1. 1

Chapter one: falling asleep. Your heart slows, and your body temperature drops about one degree.

  2. 2

Chapter two: deep sleep. Fluid washes through the brain and clears away the day's waste.

  3. 3

    Chapter three: dreams.

Part 4: the payoff

Answer the question the hook asked, clearly and a little later than people expect. If the hook was "why does Roman concrete last?", the payoff is the line "Roman concrete heals itself."

The payoff is often the most shared line in the video, so give it room: a pause before it, a big word on screen, nothing else happening.

Part 5: the close

End fast. One sentence that ties back to the hook, then point to the next video that continues the story. Long goodbyes are where viewers leave.

Leave the last 5 to 20 seconds clean if you'll add a YouTube end screen; an outro card behind it gives the end screen elements a calm background.

The fill-in template

Copy this into your notes and replace the brackets. Aim for about 150 words a minute of video when it's read by a voice.

  1. 1

    Hook

[The strangest true thing, in one sentence.]

  2. 2

    Promise

[By the end, you'll know ___ and ___.]

  3. 3

    Chapter 1-3

[Mini-hook. Two to five short sentences. A fact on screen.]

  4. 4

    Payoff

[The answer to the hook, said plainly.]

  5. 5

    Close

[One line back to the hook. Next: ___.]

From script to video

Once it's written, you can film it with a teleprompter or skip the camera. Paste the script into UGCLive Editor and our AI splits it at sentences, voices it, gives every line a picture, turns your numbers, lists and quotes into motion graphics, and captions it word by word.

Every scene stays editable, so a line that reads badly out loud is a ten-second fix and a new render.

Read it out loud before you make it

A script that reads well on the page can trip a voice. Read every line out loud once: if you stumble, a voice will too. Swap long words for short ones, split sentences at "and", and write numbers the way you say them.

Mark where the picture should change. A new picture every sentence or two keeps a faceless video moving; a line that needs no picture is often a line the video doesn't need.

Questions

How long should a YouTube script be?

About 150 words per minute of video for a natural voice, a bit less for a slow, calm channel. An 8-minute video is roughly 1,100 to 1,300 words.

Do YouTubers write full scripts?

Many do, especially faceless and educational channels where the narration is the video. Others write bullet points and talk. A full script is easier to pace and easier to turn into a video automatically.

What is the most important part of a YouTube script?

The first line. It decides whether anyone hears the rest. Write ten versions and keep the one you couldn't scroll past.

How do I write a script for a YouTube Short?

Four lines: the hook, the reason, the turn, the payoff. One idea only. Read it out loud; if it runs over 60 seconds, cut a sentence.

Can I turn my script into a video without filming?

Yes. Paste it into UGCLive Editor's New video and it makes the narration, pictures, motion graphics and captions, as a Short or a 1920×1080 YouTube video up to 15 minutes.

Should the hook repeat the title?

No. The title earns the click and the hook earns the next ten seconds. Open on something the title promised but didn't say, so the viewer gets something new the moment they arrive.
