The best AI video editors, compared
There's no single best one. There's the best one for the video you make most.
Pick by the job. For talking-head footage you clean up by transcript, Descript. For long videos cut into clips, Opus Clip. For caption-heavy Shorts, Submagic. For a free editor in the browser, Clipchamp or CapCut. For editing by telling the editor what you want, ChatCut or UGCLive Editor, and UGCLive Editor also makes a whole video from a script.
| Editor | Best at | Edit by |
|---|---|---|
| UGCLive Editor | Script to video and chat edits on a real timeline | Chat or timeline |
| ChatCut | Chat edits, desktop and web | Chat or timeline |
| Descript | Talking heads and podcasts | Transcript |

How we compared them
Every editor here was judged on what its own website and pricing page say on October 29, 2026. We didn't run speed tests or score output quality, and we left out prices a product doesn't publish.
The question for each one is simple: what kind of video does it make easiest? An editor built for podcasts feels slow for a faceless channel, and a clip finder is the wrong tool for a product ad.
- How you edit: timeline, transcript, chat or templates
- What it makes from nothing (a script, a long video, a prompt)
- Exports: size, watermark, limits
- What the free plan includes
UGCLive Editor: say the edit, or start from a script
UGCLive Editor is ours, so read this one knowing that. Drop in footage and type what you want: cut the pauses, add captions, add a lower third with my name, make three hooks. Our AI makes the change on a real timeline, lists what it changed, and one Undo takes the whole request back.
Paste a script instead and it makes the finished video: narration in one of 130 voices, a picture for every sentence, motion graphics for numbers, lists and quotes, and word-timed captions, up to 15 minutes, as a Short (1080×1920) or for YouTube (1920×1080). Plans are $20, $50 and $100 a month.

ChatCut: the other editor you talk to
ChatCut calls itself the AI video editor you talk to. You describe a change, it lands on a timeline and canvas, and you can adjust it by hand. It has desktop apps for macOS and Windows, a web app, and XML export to Premiere, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and CapCut.
Its site lists a free plan with a 60-minute web export limit and paid tiers by monthly credits. If you finish edits in a desktop NLE, that XML export is its strongest point. UGCLive Editor differs by making a full video from a script and by its built-in graphics library.
Descript and CapCut: the two everyone already knows
Descript edits video by editing its transcript: delete a sentence and the clip goes with it. Its pricing page lists Free, Hobbyist ($24 a month, $16 billed yearly), Creator ($35, or $24) and Business ($65, or $50), with filler-word removal from Hobbyist up. It's the pick for interviews, podcasts and long talking heads.
CapCut covers desktop, web and phone, with a huge template library, auto captions, text to speech and background removal. Its homepage doesn't list prices. It's the pick when you want trending templates and effects and you're happy to edit on a timeline yourself.

Opus Clip and Submagic: short-form specialists
Opus Clip turns a long video into short clips and scores each one with a virality score on its paid plans. Its pricing page lists a free plan with watermarked caption templates, Starter at $15 a month and Pro at $29. If your source is a long podcast or stream, start there.
Submagic is about captions: animated templates, B-roll, silence and bad-take removal and hook titles. Its plans are Starter ($19 a month), Pro ($39) and Business ($69), each with a cap on video length (2, 5 and 30 minutes). It suits a creator who films short talking clips and wants them captioned fast.
Kapwing and Clipchamp: browser editors with free plans
Kapwing is a collaborative browser editor. Its free plan exports 720p with a watermark, up to 4 minutes; Pro is $16 a month with 4K exports and no watermark, and Business $50. Teams that edit together in one workspace like it.
Clipchamp is Microsoft's. Its free plan exports up to 1080p with no watermark and includes auto captions, voiceovers and silence removal; Premium comes with Microsoft 365 for 4K and premium stock. For a free, plain editor it's hard to beat.
Which one to pick
Match the editor to your most common video, not your most ambitious one. Most creators end up with one main editor and one helper.
| You make | Start with |
|---|---|
| Faceless YouTube or Shorts from a script | UGCLive Editor |
| Talking heads you want cleaned up by chat | UGCLive Editor or ChatCut |
| Podcasts and interviews | Descript |
| Clips from long streams | Opus Clip |
| Caption-first Shorts | Submagic |
| Free edits, no watermark | Clipchamp |
| Trend templates and effects | CapCut |
What to check before you pay
Most of these editors have a free plan or trial, so test the one video you make most often in two of them before deciding.
- Export size and watermark on the plan you'd actually buy
- Limits per video: length caps, minutes a month, credits
- Whether AI changes land on a timeline you can still edit
- What happens to your footage and projects if you cancel
Questions

Clipchamp's free plan exports 1080p without a watermark. Descript, Kapwing, Opus Clip and ChatCut have free plans with limits listed on their pricing pages. UGCLive Editor lets you open and look around the editor for free; making and exporting videos needs a plan from $20 a month.
What is the best AI video editor for YouTube?
For long talking videos, Descript. For faceless channels where you start from a script, UGCLive Editor makes the narration, a picture for every line, motion graphics and captions in 1920×1080, up to 15 minutes. For turning episodes into Shorts, Opus Clip.
Can an AI video editor replace editing by hand?
For cuts, captions, pauses and graphics, mostly yes. The best ones put every change on a timeline, so you can still trim, move or undo what it did. That's the part to check before you pick one.
